INVITATION You are being invited to take part in this research study because you are a Canadian gastric cancer surgical oncologist who performs peritoneal lavage techniques at an academic hospital. We want to survey current practices of peritoneal lavage from surgeons with at least 5 years of practice experience and identify their practicing hospital as one of the primary disease treatment sites for gastric cancer. STUDY PROCEDURE If you decide to take part in this research study, you will be asked to complete an online survey asking about your surgical practice and usual techniques in diagnostic peritoneal lavage. We will distribute surveys using UBC Faculty of Medicine REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture). This survey utilizes the implied consent model. This means that by completing and submitting your responses to this survey, you are consenting to the use of your responses in the research outlined in this form and that your identity will not be tied to your responses in any way. STUDY RESULTS The main study findings will be published in academic journal articles and presented in medical conferences. POTENTIAL RISKS OF THE STUDY We do not think there is anything in the study that could harm you or be bad for you. The survey will not influence your status, academic standing, or evaluations in your practice, academic site, or training program. As some of the information pertains to your demographics and practice style, it is possible that you may experience emotional discomfort while completing the survey. You do not need to answer questions that you do not want to answer or that make you feel uncomfortable. As we are collecting your responses using REDCap, there is always a small risk of information breach. We will take all necessary protections to protect the information shared with us. We will not be collecting identifiable information connected to responses and your individual response cannot be tied to you. POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF THE STUDY The research will not benefit you directly. Participation will allow you to participate in this first step towards a prospective Canadian consensus on best practices for detecting peritoneal disease, and improve predicting overall survival in our gastric cancer population. No financial incentives are offered for participation in this study. CONFIDENTIALITY Your confidentiality will be respected. For the purposes of ensuring proper monitoring of the research study, it is possible that representatives of the University of British Columbia Research Ethics Board and affiliated sites or regulatory authorities may consult your original research data to check that the information collected for the study is correct and follows proper laws and guidelines. By participating in this study, you authorize such access. UBC FoM REDCap is a data management tool which uses a web server that employs Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology for the secure transfer of data between a client computer and the server. The application and the database are housed on separate virtual networks providing enhanced security. The IT network is protected and governed by security mechanisms defined in the UBC Research IT security policies. OPEN ACCESS Researchers may be required by journals to make their findings and/or de-identified data available at the time of publication. Only the deidentified data will be made publicly available. However, once the data are made publicly available, the you will not be able to withdraw your data. CONTACT FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE STUDY If you have any questions or concerns about what we are asking of you, please contact the study leader or one of the study staff.
